Happy Hour at Allen's is, as usual, loud with competing voices and scents, all of which are less important to Auggie than Annie and Jai's laughter and the second beer in front of him.

Well. Almost all. Occasionally Auggie cocks his head at the sound of heels or the floral scent of shampoo and listens to Jai and Annie's reactions. Jai has one chuckle for redheads and another for brunettes, while Annie has a groan for blondes that Auggie is told is rather hypocritical of her.

"Did the last three girls all have tequila, or was it just one carrying enough shots for her whole party?" he wonders.

"The last four," Jai corrects, audibly smirking. "Your nose must be getting tired."

"I don't get it. Cinco de Mayo is tomorrow -- you'd think people could hold off on the faux-Mexican debauchery until Saturday."

He hears Annie sit bolt upright.

"Oh crap, it's Friday, I have a thing with my--"

"Sister," Auggie and Jai chorus with her. Auggie grins, in spite of the dirty look he's sure she's giving him, and adds, "Jai, you owe me ten bucks."

Jai sighs and digs in his pockets. "Which ought to just about cover your cab ride." He slaps the money onto the table at Auggie's ten o'clock. "Annie, I'll walk you to your car, I'm headed that way."

"Now there's a Pyrrhic victory," Auggie says, with a sigh of his own. "Annie, did he really give me a ten?"

"Yes!" Annie says, laughing, and squeezes his shoulder as she stands. "You're so paranoid."

"I'm wounded that you don't trust me," Jai agrees, also standing.

"You'll heal, I'm sure. Have a good weekend, you two. Don't do anything I wouldn't do."

"Same to you, Auggie," Jai says, with an eyeroll crystal-clear in his voice.

"That'll be a boring weekend, then," Auggie calls after Jai's cologne and Annie's heels, then turns back to his beer. Now where is he going to find a ride with all these tequila-soaked early birds?

"I'll keep that in mind."

He tugs her gently to a stop, leans over to nuzzle her hair, and finds her cheek to return the kiss.

Oh, really?

She steps in front of him and turns to face him, sliding one hand lightly to his shoulder and the other up to his jaw, and kisses him on the lips.

That wasn't so much a surprise. He doesn't mind. It's a little hard to kiss her back, grinning like this, but he manages.

His damn cane is getting in the way of him pulling her closer -- which might not be a bad thing, all things considered. They're still in public, after all.

"I like you," she informs him between kisses. "You're sweet. Come check out my bike."

"If I didn't know better I'd think that was a euphemism," he murmurs. "Can that be a euphemism in about an hour?"

"Depends. How long will it take to get to your place?" she asks, returning to his side and slipping her arm through his. "If the answer is 'less than an hour', we're golden."

"Probably half an hour, depending on traffic, so factoring in time for actually checking out your bike and then foreplay . . ."

"Oh, so you can do math," she teases.

"When I need to," he agrees, serenely.

"So it's not how often but how soon that's the important question, huh?"

"At the moment? Yes."

She laughs and kisses his cheek again.

"In that case, say hello to Vivi," she says, and somewhere around hello his cane bounces off a tire.

He stops automatically when his cane encounters the obstacle.

"Hello to Vivi," he says, intrigued.

Elizabeth

takes his hand. "Want me to introduce you?"

She guides his fingers to the curve of the bike (http://www.google.ca/search?q=victory+vision)'s windscreen, over the rim and down the slope of the glass to the smooth plastic supporting it.

"Vivi," she murmurs, "this is Auggie. He thinks you're a euphemism."

". . . You're really not convincing me that it's not," he points out.

He takes over now, sliding his palm over the sweep of metal and plastic that lead to her handlebars. His head is up, cocked a little to one side; his lips are slightly parted as he explores the contours of the bike's dash and seat.

There's something in his eyes, unseeing as they are -- maybe focus, maybe wistfulness.

"This bike doesn't need to be a euphemism," she says fondly, stroking the backs of her fingers up his wrist. "She's not a sexual reference, she's just plain sexual."

"Sure feels that way," he agrees. He runs his hand down along the seats. "What model?"

"2011. Liking her so far?"

"Very much."

He wraps a hand around one of the passenger handles experimentally.

"I can't wait to hear her purr."

She laughs and comes up behind him, moving with deliberate slowness so there will be nothing surprising about the way she slides her arms around his waist.

"Anytime you like," she promises, breathing the words into his ear.

He grins, rubbing his thumb over the margin of metal and leather, and turns his head to nuzzle her hair and her cheek.

"Want to get out of here?"
